2017 Fall Trip -- Barber Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham AL

We arrived at the Lakeside Landing RV Park on Logan Martin Lake near Leeds AL.  It's about 20 miles from the Barber Museum as the crow fly's, but when I called the museum they said this was as close as we could get.

Here is a link on Google Maps to where we are now.

There was a huge Bass Tournament on Friday and Saturday
Saturday we headed to the museum
 Wayne checking out the art
The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum began as George Barber's private collect that he opened to the public in 1994.  About 3 years later he was asked to loan about 400 vintage bikes to a traveling exhibition that began at the Guggenheim Museum in New York before traveling to Europe.  The "Art of the Motorcycle" was the highest attended exhibit at the Guggenheim to that point.  After seeing what beautiful buildings museums were in Europe, Barber decided to upgrade his in Birmingham.  In 2003 it was relocated to this beautiful custom building at the Barber Motorsports complex. It is five levels of exhibits and a basement with the restoration rooms.  There are almost 1500 vintage an modern motorcycles and racing cars. It is considered to be the largest collection in the world.  I believe it.
It's located at the track, so all day we had car racing sounds in the background. From what we could see, the track is beautiful.
I was amazed with these round, multi-level displays
I could have taken thousands of photo's, so I made myself keep it to just a few.
The 1915 Dreadnought Twin was built for Sears by the DeLuxe Motorcycle Company.  I always heard that you could order anything from Sears, I guess that included several different motorcycles and scooters.  You ordered it from the catalog and it would be delivered to your closest railroad station ready to ride.  The big attraction was that with Sear's you could pay in installments!
This carved wooden beauty was seen through the glass doors of the business offices
 I had one of these!!!
This is a 1955 Simplex Automatic Power Cycle built in New Orleans in the year we were born!
Wayne got his love of two wheels after a neighbor gave him his first ride on one of these
I love this shot

We returned to camp and decided that we needed a down day so Sunday was spent in camp.  Wayne reorganized some stuff in the trailer and I used the park's WIFI to post the last three stops. While doing that we changed our minds several times about the next week of our trip, but good things are still on the schedule so check back soon!
