Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Oh My!! Part 6

Sunday - May 20, 2018

Today Andy set us loose on the world without adult supervision.  Wayne and I took Sharon's car about 40 miles away to the medieval town of Chester, which is just a mile and a half from Wales.
 Alone at last!!
Chester is a walled city on the River Dee.  Chester was granted city status in 1541. It originated as a Roman Fort named Deva Victrix in the reign of the Emperor Vespasian in 79 A.D. Deva later became a major civilian settlement.  In 689, King Ethelred of Mercia founded the Minister Church of West Mercia, which later became Chester's first cathedral, and the Saxons extended and strengthened the walls to protect the city against the Danes.  Chester was one of the last cities in England to fall to the Normans.  William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a castle, to dominate the town and the nearby Welsh border.

We walked through town looking at old buildings, this one was established in 1269
This was the view across the River Dee
 Here's the Chester Castle
This race course is in what used to be a Roman Quary
 The City Wall walk
The Goblin Tower, also known as Pemberton's Parlor was built in the early 18th century.
 This is the Parlor
 More of the Wall Walk
 The wall itself

A newer building outside the wall, newer being relative...
 Check out the chimneys
 The Chester Cathedral
 The Chester Cathedral
This procession went from one church across the street and down the block to the Cathedral for the Evensong service.

At this point I hit the overload level, so back in the car for the drive back to Andy's house.
