Ring Around the Country, Part 1

Monday May 28, 2018

Wow, does time fly. Two weeks ago we arrived in Manchester UK and have spent a fantastic 2 weeks with my cousins Andy and Sharon. Now it is time to step out and do our driving tour of the UK.  We will spend the next four weeks traveling counter clockwise around England and Scotland. We have our little rental car, a 3-cylinder, 1000 cc gas powered Toyota Aygo.
Sharon and her mum Vera come out to wish us well.
We headed off about 9 am, and had some GPS issues that had us on the motorway, headed north instead of south.  Oh well, no worries, we have 4 weeks! I think I have the GPS fixed, at least I hope so.  We did manage to get where we were headed.
Our first stop was the Broadway Tower. This interesting fellow was also there
The tower was the brainchild of the great 19th century landscape designer Capability Brown. Brown also did the gardens at Chatsworth House that we saw our first week. The tower was completed in 1798.  I thought we'd have a picnic lunch and enjoy the view, however the weather did not cooperate.
These red deer live in the tower meadow.  We had our picnic in the car instead and then headed to Showshill Manor to see the house and gardens.
Snowshill Manor is a Cotwold manor house packed with extraordinary treasures collected over a life time by Charles Wade.
Wade began collecting at the age of 7. He bought Snowshill Manor in 1919 in part to restore the manor house and gardens and also to house his ever growing collections.
Found our first set of armor
Our timing is great, so many things are in bloom
From the manor we headed to Bourton-On-The-Water, a picturesque Cotswold village in south central England.  Straddling the River Windrush, it's known for its low bridges and traditional stone houses.
It turns out that today was a Bank Holiday, like our National Holiday. Bad news? The kids are off this week, so things could be pretty busy for the next few days....
We are staying at the Lodge in Broadway, a small hotel located off the main street. You enter through the courtyard.
No numbers on the door, just these signs.  We're in the owl room.
 Cute decor

 Nice en-suite
After checking in we headed out to wander around town and find dinner
Beautiful view of the row houses
Wayne on one of the Public Paths
A great way to get places without traffic
